TO: The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero

Nobody should spend the last months of their life worrying about how they will stay warm, or if they can afford to power the essential medical equipment that keeps them comfortable.

But many terminally ill people won't get enough support with their bills this winter, despite being amongst those hardest hit by high energy costs.

That's why we are calling on the UK Government to urgently introduce a Social Energy Tariff for people living with a terminal illness, helping them stay warm, safe and comfortable at home with the people they love.

➕ What is a Social Energy Tariff?

A Social Energy Tariff is a special discounted energy rate, which is given to groups who have higher than average energy costs and less ability to reduce their usage.

Introducing a Social Energy Tariff for people living with a terminal illness would help make sure that people who are approaching the end of their lives can afford to heat their homes and power essential medical equipment without falling into fuel poverty.

➕ Why do terminally ill people need specialist support?

People living with a terminal illness can face energy bills up to 75% higher than average. This is because they may spend more time at home, need extra heating, need to wash bedding more frequently, and/or rely on vital at-home medical equipment.

Marie Curie's research shows that a specialist Social Energy Tariff could lift 54,000 terminally ill people out of fuel poverty every year - giving them the warmth, comfort and dignity they deserve at the end of life.
